Beard and Sideburn Transplant

Beard and sideburn transplantation is the transfer of hair follicles collected from a hairy site to beard or sideburn areas by the surgeon using follicular unit extraction methods and tools. Beard transplantation reshapes a new beard or improves the density of existing beard.

The hair at the back of the neck is the preferred donor site for beard transplantation. In case of insufficient donor hair follicles, they can also be obtained from arms, legs, and chest as the next best alternatives. Beard transplantation is suitable for patients with male pattern hair loss (MPH); however, it is impossible for other alopecia types. Alopecia universalis patients have no hair on their scalp and body, therefore they are not eligible for such procedure.

Successful and natural looking beard transplantation results are often dependent on the properties of the donor site; if the scalp hair of the patient are short and curly, then they will look much better as beard. However, if the patient has long straight hair, then there will be textural inconsistency and it will result in an unnatural look. Therefore, use of body hair instead of hair follicles will provide the best results for people with straight hair.

With recovery within 1-2 weeks:

  • Bruising
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Sensitivity or pain in receiver and donor sites
  • Ingrown follicles

There are 3000 follicles in average during a beard transplantation and 600 follicles in sideburn transplantation. There will be no scars left after beard and sideburn transplantation. First blood clot traces will go away after the first face washing 24 hours later. Transplantation area remains pinkish for two weeks and then will have its normal appearance again.

After sideburn and beard transplantation, growth is observed for ten days; you should wait for one week before shaving the beard that has grown in that period.   After shock loss at the end of the second week, the most effective results start with a gradual new growth.

Beard and mustache transplantation are considered similar to hair transplantation; however, they may be different because while hair sparseness attract too much attention, beard sparseness has a more acceptable structure. Therefore, it is not mandatory to apply dense plantation for beard and sideburns. 1000 follicle transfer to be performed for a beardless person will lead to a significantly meaningful change.
